Xanadu
Ted Nelson was one of the original technology seers whose ideas
helped to lay the intellectual groundwork for the World Wide Web.
Xanadu was his original hypertext design, which described
the ability to use multimedia and linking technology to enrich
printed text with all kinds of other references and with a
completely personal method of document navigation (by following
hyperlinks in whatever order the reader wishes).

pointers to Ted Nelson's original documents and lots of related
resources and research work. For those interested in a deeper,
richer understanding of hypertext, this site is well worth
investigating.
